If Winter Comes

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

If Winter Comes is a 1947 drama film released by MGM. The movie was directed by Victor Saville, based on novel by A.S.M. Hutchinson. The film tells the story of a textbook writer in English village, who is troubled by murder charge of a pregnant girl. It was a remake of the 1923 film If Winter Comes.

Set in the English village Penny Green in 1939, the film focuses on Mark Sabre, an author and publisher who is unhappily married to Mabel, a humorless and cold woman who usually spends her days gossiping with the townspeople. When Mark finds out his former sweetheart Nona Tybar is returning to Penny Green, Mark, unlike his wife, is delighted. Despite being engaged to a man named Tony Tyber, Nona wants to rekindle her affair with Mark. Mabel is aware of Mark's escapades with Nona, but tolerates it, thinking he will eventually decide with whom he wants to spend his life.

Tony, however, reacts less acceptive and rejoins the military regiment in hopes of winning back his wife. Despite having planned on eloping with Mark, Nona decides on remaining loyal to her husband during his absence. Mark attempts to charm Nona by trying to join the military as well, but a doctor refuses to enlist him. Soon after the outbreak of World War II, Nona leaves Penny Green in order to join the Women's Auxiliary Air Force. Life becomes quiet for Mark, until Effie Bright steps into his life. Effie, who is denounced by her family for having become pregnant, turns to Mark for help.

Mark decides on taking in Effie, thereby causing a scandal. He is soon fired from his job, with the head publisher fearing that Mark will hurt the paper's image. Mabel leaves him too, falsely claiming Effie is Mark's mistress. The townspeople soon denounce Mark and when Effie, who was already mentally unstable because of the pregnancy, finds out about what she has caused, she commits suicide by poisoning herself. Soon after, Mark is accused of murdering Effie and he is put on trial. All evidence turns against him and he becomes more distraught while time passes.

Mark is eventually acquitted when Nona returns to Penny Green and gives a testimony in which she claims that Effie turned to Mark because he is the only honest, good-hearted person in the village. Mark's reputation is cleaned and he is finally رونيتد with Nona, who has been a widow for only one day.
